JANE LOUDON 1807-1858

THE LADIE'S FLOWER GARDEN OF ORNAMENTAL ANNUALS.
Ed. London: Smith,
1842

Loudon was one of the first women to be accepted as a horticulturalist. In 1840 she published her first book on botanicals, In the 'Ladies Flower Garden of Ornamental Annuals' the various flowers are grouped in as if in bouquets with text printed in calligraphy at the bottom of each page. The hand coloring is rich and varied and done with great skill. One year later, 'The Ladies Flower Garden of Ornamental Bulbous Plants' was published. Mrs. Loudon then produced 'The Ladies Flower Garden of Ornamental Perennials', a two volume study that took over two years to complete. Her last book' The Ladies Flower Garden of Ornamental Greenhouse Plants', was published in 1848.
