Sir William Jardine

(1800-1874)

THE NATURALIST LIBRARY

One of the finest publications of natural history in the 19th century was supervised by Sir William Jardine. As editor of the Naturalists Library , Jardine commissioned experts to write volumes on their fields of animal studies. From 1833-1842 forty volumes were published on birds, fish, insects, mammals and reptiles each  containing appr.30 engravings by William Home Lizars (1788-1859).

These engravings are considered to be among the finest of their kind and were always colored by artists before publication.
